It was supposed to be a fabulous night for the inhabitants of King's Town, as the Great Autumn Festival, the yearly celebration of the work done by everyone in the city to feed the populace. The party, which starts on the day after the last of the summer crops is harvested, begins with the Mayor of King's Town making the yearly 'announcements' from the towers at the city's western gate. As part of the introduction, all members of the Royalty and visiting dignitaries are invited to the top of the tower to be present during the announcements. This year, Ameriguet Rohnar, the 2nd oldest daughter of Duke Svalinn presented herself as the representation of the Crown from Stardock. Ami, as she is known, is welcomed and offered a space atop the tower with the Mayor and several other dignitaries. A few moments after Ami entered the gate of the tower, confusion ensues, as Ami and her entourage are ambushed in the base of the tower and Ami's neck is slit.
During the chaos, the Duke's other sister, Ingridr, along with her friends and entourage are escorted into the front gates of the city, where they take refuge along one side of the cobblestone roads. One of Ingridr's friends called upon nature's weave to shelter her from the chaos among the trees while the guard reclaimed the City's order.
The night ended with the Mayor's personal guard protecting Ami's body while Ingridr and her counterparts attempt to make sense of it all. With Topgaliant Callidor and his priests sheltering in the army barracks, a brave priest of Quintauvial begins to chant over Ami while Ingridr sobs.
As the group tries to figure out what has happened, and the inhabitants of the city try to just gain re-entrance, many questions spring up:
Who would be so brazen as to murder the daughter of the King's uncle in such a public display of defiance?
How could they have gotten away with it right under the noses of the all of the city, literally in front of the Mayor's guard?
